Dr. Naumann in the Field

Terry doing his thing during the 2005
eruption of Sierra Negra Volcano in the Galapagos.
Professional Background
Dr. Naumann received his B.S. in Geology from the California State University Chico in 1983. In 1987
he completed a M.S. degree in Geology at the University of Nevada Las Vegas under the supervision of
Dr. Eugene Smith. Dr. Naumann's M.S. thesis dealt with the structural, petrogenetic and geochemical
characterization of a Mid-Miocene calc-alkaline volcanic/plutonic complex in southern Nevada. Between
1987 and 1992 he was a Research Associate at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas studying the volcanic
risk related to the proposed high-level nuclear waste repository at Yucca Mountain, Nevada.
In 1998 he completed a Ph.D at the University of Idaho under the supervision of Dr. Dennis Geist. His
Ph.D. dissertation was titled: Volcanology, Petrology, Geochemistry and Structural Development of Cerro
Azul Volcano: Implications of Intershield Differences Among Galapagos Volcanoes. Much of his dissertation
field work involved backpacking in the wilds of the Galapagos Islands. Dr. Naumann began his teaching career
as a part-time instructor first at the University of Nevada Las Vegas and then at the University of Idaho. He
has been a faculty member at the University of Alaska Anchorage since the spring of 1999 and was awarded an
Associate Professorship of Geology in 2004.
Research
Dr. Naumann conducts research in the fields of volcanology and igneous petrology. His current research deals primarily with the origin and evolution of volcanoes in the Galapagos Islands. Dr. Naumann and his students integrate mapping, sampling, petrography, geochemistry (including isotopes)and geochemical modeling in their research.
